  • Leave Your Cares at the Cross

With the state of the economy, and jobs and homes lost everyday, we all tend to worry.  It's normal to be concerned and wonder if we have enough savings.  It's understandable to put faith in your job for your provision.

I have learned, though that my job is not my provision, God is.  He is my salvation.  He is the place I can run to when everything looks bleak.

I live in Texas and we have some pretty mean thunderstorms here.  My kids know that when it looks green outside, there is a higher potential for tornadoes.  A few weeks ago, we had one of those nights where there was tornadic activity nearby and it was thundering and lightening.  It was difficult to ignore.  My husband was out of town, lending a bit more drama to the situation, and my kids decided to get into the closet under the stairs with some books, food and blankets.  They brought everything in there that they thought they needed to survive.  I was cleaning the dinner dishes and my youngest braved the elements and ran out to me.  She asked me, "Is there going to be a tornado?  How will we know?"  I told her, "Don't you know that when you worry like that, you are saying that you don't trust me?"  Immediately, I repented.  I knew at that moment how God feels when we worry.  I was sad, because she didn't have faith in me to take care of her.  I was deeply troubled also, because even after I answered her, thunder shook the house and she scampered back into the closet to hide.

The enemy wants you to live your life hiding and being frightened.  He wants you to miss out on the things of God because you were too scared to trust Him.  A life that God would have for you doesn't involve hiding in a closet; it involves stepping out in faith.

In this economy, I believe God commands us to be smart with our money and build up savings.  He wants us to view Him as our Jehovah Jireh, our provider.  All good things come from Him.  Importantly, we are to take our cares to the cross.  When we submit all of our worries to Him, our load is much lighter, and we are able to focus on what we need to do.

We all encounter the storms of this life.  Whether they be emotional, physical, spiritual - it doesn't matter.  God is waiting to hear about the struggles you have and to lift that burden from you.  Let Him be your strength and salvation, and your shelter from the storm.
